The WGRUV Dance Company is set to enchant audiences once again with a powerful repeat season of “Letters of Reflection”, following the overwhelming response to its debut earlier this year at the Lesedi at Joburg Theatre.

The contemporary ballet performance will grace the stage at the Art Centre, UJ Kingsway Campus in Johannesburg on Saturday, 26 July at 18h00 and Sunday, 27 July at 15h00, before moving on to the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town for performances on Friday, 15th August at 19h30 and Sunday, 16th August at 15h00 and 19h30.

“Letters of Reflection” comprises seven original pieces choreographed by Holly and Lex Gruver, alongside the much-acclaimed work titled “Unsquared” by American choreographer Tyler Gilstrap. Each composition unfolds like a personal letter, delving into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of relationships. Through a seamless blend of technical precision and expressive movement, the WGRUV dancers stir emotional responses that resonate universally.

In this multi-faceted production, the dance acts as a conduit for reflection, urging audiences to consider their innate beliefs about life and the role these notions play in shaping attitudes and behaviours. The pieces are described as “deeply personal yet universally resonant”, exploring narratives that promote a profound understanding of memories associated with goodness, truth, and beauty. From neoclassical to contemporary artistry, each “letter” serves to awaken the senses, allowing both young and old to engage with a fresh perspective on the world.

Creative Artistic Director Holly Gruver said she is  excited about the repeat performances: “Our hearts are full from the overwhelming response to our debut season. It’s a joy to know that our work resonated so deeply with audiences. We’re thrilled to bring the show back with a return season, bringing even more magic, movement, and emotion to the stage. We are so looking forward to taking 'Letters of Reflection' to Cape Town.”

Holly, the founder of WGRUV Dance Company, has spent over a decade choreographing a diverse portfolio of contemporary and neoclassical works, alongside extensive involvement in musical theatre and dancer training. Lex Gruver, as assistant co-director and a First Artist in the company, complements Holly’s vision through his choreography and teaching.

Tyler Gilstrap, who choreographed the popular “Unsquared”, adds depth to the performance with a rich background that includes being a founding member of the Battleworks Dance Company and contributions to the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, demonstrating her versatility and experience in the dance community.

As movement speaks and reflections unfold, “Letters of Reflection” promises to be not just a performance, but a captivating encounter that engages conversations around love, loss, and the collective journey toward a hopeful future.
