His message came as the conflict in the Middle East intensified.
As of Friday, March 6, the situation has escalated into a major regional war following a joint military campaign launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.
The conflict has now entered its seventh day, with continued strikes reported across Iran, Israel, Lebanon and several parts of the Gulf region.
One of the major turning points in the conflict was the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during the initial strikes carried out by the United States and Israeli forces.
Iran has since responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as United States military bases across the region, including locations in Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Global leaders have called for restraint. The United Nations has urged an immediate de-escalation, warning that civilians and infrastructure face severe consequences if the conflict continues to spread.
In South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa noted that the situation highlights the need for greater economic self-reliance as geopolitical tensions threaten global supply chains and could lead to rising fuel prices and inflation.
