Stellenbosch FC are steadily transforming their season, turning what once appeared to be a relegation battle into a genuine push for a Top 8 finish. As their focus shifts to a crucial away fixture against Siwelele FC, the Cape Winelands side have an opportunity to edge closer to a remarkable turnaround.

Stellies travel to the Free State Stadium on Tuesday evening (7.30pm kick-off) aiming to halt the Bloemfontein outfit’s impressive six-match unbeaten streak — a run that has lifted the hosts clear of immediate relegation danger. However, confidence within the Stellenbosch camp is equally high, with Gavin Hunt’s men beginning to find rhythm at a decisive stage of the campaign.

The timing of their resurgence could not be more significant. Back-to-back victories over two of the league’s strongest sides — a 2-1 triumph against Kaizer Chiefs followed by a hard-fought 1-0 win over AmaZulu FC — have injected belief into the squad.

Their most recent success at the Danie Craven Stadium once again highlighted how formidable they have become on home soil, a venue that is increasingly proving to be a fortress under Hunt’s guidance.

Since taking charge, the former Chiefs coach put survival as his primary objective. That pragmatic approach came at a cost, with Stellies bowing out of the Nedbank Cup and the Caf Confederation Cup, but league stability was always the priority. Now, with safety within touching distance, the broader picture looks far more encouraging.

Stellenbosch sit just two points behind eighth-placed TS Galaxy, and with momentum on their side, even a top-five finish no longer seems far-fetched. Such an achievement would be extraordinary considering the precarious position they found themselves in earlier this season.

Their comeback victory over Chiefs may well prove to be the defining moment of their campaign. Overturning a deficit against one of the country’s traditional giants demonstrated both resilience and growing maturity — qualities essential for any side aiming to climb the table.

The narrow win over AmaZulu further reinforced their consistency, particularly against opposition known for their consistency in results this season.

Yet, Tuesday’s challenge will be far from straightforward. Siwelele have made Bloemfontein one of the toughest places to visit, drawing strength from their passionate home support.

Several established teams have already struggled there this season, and Stellenbosch will need to be at their sharpest to secure maximum points.

There is also added motivation. The reverse fixture earlier in the campaign ended in a 2-0 defeat for Stellies while they were still under Steve Barker’s stewardship. Much has changed since then. Hunt’s arrival has brought renewed structure and confidence, and the team remains unbeaten in the league since his appointment, with their last defeat dating back to December — a 2-1 loss to Polokwane City.

Having collected ten points from their last four outings, Stellies have positioned themselves strongly for a late surge. Hunt has next targeted 30-point mark, and with two additional home fixtures to follow this encounter, the trajectory appears promising.

From staring relegation in the face to daring to dream of the Top 8, Stellies are peaking at precisely the right moment — and another positive result in Bloemfontein could further underline their remarkable revival.
