The players’ union demands protection for players in the Gallants-Swallows dispute

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has stepped into the fray concerning the escalating club status dispute between Marumo Gallants and Moroka Swallows.

The union is urging immediate measures to safeguard the interests of players and technical staff caught in the turmoil. With the uncertainty surrounding club ownership and financial obligations hanging overhead, SAFPU’s intervention underscores the critical need for stability in professional football.

Earlier this week, a storm brewed as Gallants reportedly received court papers from Swallows, who are seeking to annul the sale agreement of their Betway Premiership status.

Having acquired the top-flight status for the 2024/25 season, Gallants now face allegations that the financial obligations tied to the transaction remain unmet.

In their statement, SAFPU emphasised that while legal and contractual matters unfold, the players must not suffer the consequences of administrative conflicts.

“While the matter may be subject to legal and contractual processes between the respective parties, SAFPU wishes to make it clear that footballers and technical staff must not become victims of boardroom disputes,” the union stated.

The risks posed by such disputes extend beyond the pitch, affecting employment stability, income security, and the overall welfare of players and staff.

“Players are workers whose livelihoods, careers, and families depend on the stability of the football industry,” SAFPU affirmed, vowing to intervene decisively against any developments that would jeopardise the mental and financial well-being of its members.

Financial reports indicate that Gallants have only partially fulfilled their R40 million payment obligation, with a significant R10 million still owed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

This unresolved financial commitment has compounded the situation, prompting Swallows to take legal action to regain their top-flight status.

Despite the legal challenges, Gallants have publicly committed to continuing their football operations as usual while the matter progresses through the courts. A spokesperson for the club, Sello Nduna, reiterated this stance, stating, “Please note that the team has already released a statement.”

SAFPU’s proactive stance includes discussions with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to clarify the nuances of the situation and ensure that their interests, as well as the PSL’s sporting integrity, are preserved.

In the wake of the unfolding crisis, the players’ union has reiterated the need for urgent, transparent actions from all parties involved to honour contractual commitments and alleviate the vulnerability players face.
