Nedbank Cup shocker: Upington City stun Magesi FC as amateur sides shine

The Nedbank Cup, renowned for its unpredictability, saw another twist this past Saturday when Magesi FC, the ambitious Premiership side, suffered an unexpected exit at the hands of Upington City.

The match, hosted at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium, concluded dramatically with a penalty shootout. It left Magesi in disbelief after a goalless draw through extra time culminated in a heartbreaking 5–4 defeat on penalties.

Magesi FC's journey came to a shocking halt as they sought to build on their remarkable triumph in the 2024 Carling Knockout Cup final, where they famously toppled Mamelodi Sundowns. This unexpected loss serves as a stark reminder of the intense competition in South African football, particularly in knockout formats, where a single slip can spell the end of a campaign.

In a day filled with surprises, Cape Town's Vasco da Gama (Safa Second Division) became the weekend's first amateur side to advance to the last 16. They delivered a commanding performance against fellow ABC Motsepe League competitors, Luthuli Brigades, securing a decisive 4-1 victory on home soil at Athlone Stadium.

Jacksa Spears, another squad from the ABC Motsepe League, also asserted their strength, defeating fourth-tier side Cardinals FC 4-2 after a thrilling encounter that went to extra time. The match, played at Goble Park, saw Jacksa Spears equalise in regulation before overpowering their opponents in the additional period, buoyed by two goals from standout player Moeti Mofokeng.

Amateur teams have increasingly made their mark in the Nedbank Cup; every edition (except 2021) has featured at least one team advancing to the last 16. The 2021 season was unique, as the COVID-19 pandemic halted football for amateur ranks.

Additionally, the record for the most SAFA teams reaching this prestigious stage is four — a milestone achieved twice in the tournament's history — highlighting the potential for lower-tier clubs to challenge their more established rivals.

Meanwhile, at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg, Casric Stars from the NFD made their intentions clear by securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Army Rocket, an ABC Motsepe League outfit.

In doing so, they advanced to the next round and further showcased the depth of competition within the tournament.
