Lions wing Kelly Mpeku is fast becoming a fan favourite at Ellis Park in the United Rugby Championship after a few stellar performances this season, which have not only showcased his blinding speed but also his commitment to fight for lost causes.
Following another standout performance in the Lions’ recent victory over the Sharks, Mpeku has cemented his place on the right wing and is slowly becoming a complete player. The 22-year-old speedster has all the raw qualities to become a top-tier professional, but it is his heart and desire on the field that have been most evident — particularly during scrumhalf Morne van den Berg’s try over the weekend.
After spotting space, the No 9 chipped a ball over the top for Mpeku to chase. The wing spectacularly fielded a 50-50 ball before offloading to Van den Berg to finish the move. It turned out to be one of the defining moments of the match.
“I have to give credit to Krappie [Van den Berg] … he saw that space. I didn’t even see it. He put that kick in behind and then he followed it up with great support play,” Mpeku said, unselfishly deferring to his teammate.
However, the reality is that Mpeku’s willingness to chase lost causes helped the Lions secure that crucial score. It is a trait he has displayed throughout the season, with a work-rate that rivals the best in the competition. Mpeku credits the Lions' coaching staff and the team environment for his recent surge in form.
“It’s obviously been great and I’ve got the backing of my coaches and teammates,” Mpeku says of his current purple patch.
“I’ve got players around me, such as Quan Horn, Angelo Davids, and Chris Smith — great players who have made me feel comfortable and allowed me to perform to the best of my ability and showcase my talent. I get a lot of clarity from the coaches and our game-drivers during the week. Come match day, I just feel ready to perform.”
The Lions take on the Stormers this weekend at Ellis Park on Saturday with a slim chance of winning the SA Shield still on the cards. They must beat the Cape side and hope the Bulls can do them a favour by defeating the Sharks at Loftus later that afternoon.
Mpeku is well aware of the threat posed by the Stormers and their Springbok fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Having faced the playmaker in junior rugby, Mpeku has watched the pivot’s rise with admiration.
“Sacha is a quality player; seeing how he has progressed at senior level is absolutely amazing,” he said.
“The coaches have a plan and we just back the coaches and their plan. We know it’s on the line and it’s a crucial game for us, but we are preparing well and hopefully we can do the business on Saturday.”
