The Southern Guards believe they are heading in the right direction after another consistent performance at LIV Golf Singapore, where they claimed fifth place.

While they were in a position to chase victory, the final day ultimately belonged to 4Aces GC, who secured back-to-back titles following their success in Hong Kong last weekend.

The South Africans had to settle for fifth but feel they have gathered valuable momentum.

Despite missing out on the podium at the fourth tournament of the LIV season, South Africa’s four LIV golfers — captain Louis Oosthuizen, Dean Burmester, Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel — believe they are moving in the right direction.

Oosthuizen set the tone with two strong rounds at the start of the Singapore event, while Burmester finished the final two days strongly. Now, ahead of LIV Golf’s South African debut at Steyn City, the foursome will look to combine their good performances as they chase a first podium finish of the season on home soil.

Steyn City in Johannesburg will host the LIV stars this week for the fifth event on the schedule.

“We are getting closer and closer to a good team performance,” Burmester said after his final round in Singapore on Sunday.

“It feels like we are starting to gel, with all four of us having a solid week. If we can produce another performance like that, one guy will click and play really well, while the other three have solid weeks. We are definitely trending in the right direction; we have been consistent this year.

“Now it is all about recovery. Playing three weeks in a row takes a lot out of you, especially in Singapore where it is humid and a tough walk. Rest and recovery are needed, but I feel my game is in a decent place, which is the good news. Hopefully not much practice is needed, but we will be ready for Steyn City.

“Biltong, braai, boerewors and brandy. Life can’t be easier. I am ready for the home support, and I know the people will be firmly behind us.”

Burmester shot a three-under-par round to finish his tournament at seven-under, tying for 10th place. Oosthuizen (-4) and Schwartzel ended tied for 21st at four-under-par, while Grace (-1) finished tied for 33rd.

Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau won the individual title after a play-off with wildcard Richard T. Lee.
