Proteas bowling coach, Piet Botha, told the media on Friday that 19-year-old Kwena Maphaka needs to pick up more Four-Day cricket experience to unlock his true potential.
Maphaka went wicketless in the first Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo last week, returning figures of 0/52 and 0/28 in South Africa's 328-run victory.
Although the youngster did not take a wicket in the first Test, he bowled fast and imposed himself on the Zimbabwe batting unit with his aggression, a feat that has caught Conrad's and the world's attention in the first place.
Due to his raw pace and aggression, the youngster has already completed two Indian Premier League seasons and one SA20 season.
However, Test cricket is more than just bowling fast and showing aggression.
Botha highlighted that nothing beats experience and that the 19-year-old left-arm quick will get shape up to be a proper Test bowler as he continues to pick up experience.
"He's already involved worldwide in leagues and playing a lot of T20 cricket. When it comes to Test cricket, it's a different way of approaching your bowling. I think, obviously, he was a bit nervous. I spoke to him, and his nerves were there, which is very natural for a 19-year-old playing in a Test match," Botha told the media on Friday.
"Realistically, he's only played five First-Class games and that includes two Test matches. Ultimately, as a coach, you can do a lot in terms of talking to a person and working with him technically, but he needs to pick up experience.
That's the most important for all of us who've played cricket.
"You learn as you play. For him, it's just about getting a lot more Four-Day cricket and Five-Day cricket under the belt and then he'll improve because as he's in the environment, as he goes through his experiences, he'll also work things out for himself.
"We can talk through things. We had a good chat this morning. It's all about just that exposure and making sure that he learns as he goes and he picks up his confidence as he goes."
With the victory in the first Test, South Africa is 1-0 up in the series and heads into the second and final Test this week in search of a series whitewash.
The second Test is set to get underway on Sunday, July 06 in Bulawayo.
