Soweto Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2026 has wrapped its 26th season on a high note, drawing large crowds to the Soweto Theatre and reinforcing Johannesburg’s rising status as a continental fashion hub.
The three-day showcase brought together emerging designers, established labels and international talent, highlighting both local creativity and the industry’s expanding global reach.
Opening night focused on new voices, with standout moments including Finch by Kwanele Thusi, who challenged convention with an all-male lineup in bold pink velvet.
Collaboration also took centre stage, with textile designer Nobuzwe Mabona partnering with Ayabulela Mzananda to showcase innovative fabric applications.
Other highlights included HOSS BY SASS by Sanele Thabethe, which blended red-carpet glamour with wearable design, and Originally Kasified Clothing by Muzikayise Mabena and Loyiso Dyantji, whose denim-inspired collection paid tribute to township culture.
Student designers from the Tshwane University of Technology also made an impression, underscoring the role of academic institutions in shaping the next generation of talent.
A major talking point was the African debut of Spanish designer Viktoria Varga, whose vibrant, hand-painted pieces drew strong audience reactions.
“Presenting at Soweto Fashion Week was an incredibly powerful experience. There’s a raw energy and authenticity here. It felt like a true celebration of creativity, culture, and individuality,” said Varga.
She added:
“The Soweto audience was amazing. The audience was very expressive, engaged, and genuinely connected to the pieces. I felt a strong emotional response, which is always the most rewarding. I would absolutely love to collaborate with local artists and designers here, there’s such a unique creative language that really inspires me.”
Founder Stephen Manzini praised the season’s impact, saying:
“I am pleased to see that the Soweto Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2026 season delivered with such strength and creative excellence. The collections were a true reflection of the depth of talent within our industry. As we move forward, we will begin the process of launching the South African Fashion Association, an initiative shaped by the voices of designers and industry stakeholders to represent, unify, and advance the fashion sector nationally in an inclusive and impactful way.”
The event also boosted the city’s tourism and creative economy, with Joburg Tourism highlighting its contribution to SMME participation and global visibility.
Soweto Fashion Week is expected to return later this year with its Spring/Summer 2026 edition, as momentum continues to build around South Africa’s fashion industry.
