As the year draws to a close (which I still can’t actually believe) and the weather remains stubbornly unpredictable, many of us are looking for cheerful indoor escapes to keep the festive spirit alive.
Many of us aren’t going away this time around and let’s not forget it’s already pretty much school holidays and it’s tough keeping those little ones busy. Dezemba brings with it a welcome mix of culture, creativity and community so this week I decided to make a little list and check it twice so you can find out what’s naughty and nice.
Let’s kick off with the much loved Nutcracker ballet at Montecasino, December 4 to 14. This magical production features acclaimed local and international dancers, bringing Tchaikovsky’s music to life with shimmering sets and enchanting storytelling.
Over the same weekend rAge Expo opens its doors at Fourways Mall, December 5 to 7, inviting gaming fans into a lively world of esports tournaments, cosplay, new technology and the country’s biggest BYOC LAN, all creating a vibrant gathering for enthusiasts of every age.
Today, until 3pm, the Brooklyn Mall Antique Fair returns to Pretoria, offering a charming indoor treasure hunt among vintage fashion, jewellery and furniture, with knowledgeable dealers ready to share stories behind their finds. The Design Quarter in Fourways also hosts the Christmas edition of the Vintage Decor and Gifting Show December 6 and 7, where aisles of festive trinkets, handmade treats, tableware and seasonal decorations set a wonderfully nostalgic tone for family shopping days filled with music and delicious food.
Live music lovers are well catered for too. Radio Kalahari Orkes performs on December 7, on the rooftop at The Troyeville, promising an afternoon of warm hospitality, hearty food and a lively atmosphere as the sun dips behind the Johannesburg skyline.
Ian Roberts is a magic storyteller and the cherry on top is that superstar newcomers L8 Antique are starting off the proceedings.
Later in the month, on December 14, Swing City brings its joyful Christmas concert to the same venue, blending cherished carols with smooth swing classics for a relaxed summery celebration. Plus it’s like an injection of happiness getting to watch Nathan Ro and Graeme Watkins do their very own Rat Pack thing.
Mid month also sees the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra arrive in Johannesburg, December 10 and 11, with its Voices of Home tour. This powerful musical collaboration brings together international conductor Marin Alsop, South African cello star Abel Selaocoe and master percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger for two evenings of expressive orchestral performance that celebrates heritage, artistry and the unifying spirit of music.
Families looking for festive wonder can join Circus Galassia from 19 December onwards as it unveils Zaylon at Sandown High School. This new seasonal adventure follows Zi, a bright-eyed visitor from a distant planet who discovers the magic and courage behind human performance. With talented acrobats, astonishing stunts and heartwarming storytelling, it offers a colourful escape throughout the holiday period and brings this magical month of indoor celebrations to a close with a flourish.
Pack your brolly and your sunscreen and I'm sending you all the good Dezemba vibes.
