The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged the public to refrain from spreading false information on social media regarding the kidnapping case of businessman Jerry Boshoga.
This follows the circulation of a social media post falsely claiming that Boshoga, who went missing last November, had been found deceased. SAPS has confirmed that Boshoga has not been found, either alive or dead, and that the investigation remains ongoing.
In a media statement issued on July 31, SAPS warned that the spread of unverified reports was causing additional trauma for Boshoga’s family, including his mother, wife and children. The police are in close contact with the family and confirmed they would be the first to be informed of any developments.
SAPS called on all social media users to stop sharing misleading information and to consider the impact such posts have on affected families.
The investigation into Boshoga’s disappearance is said to be at a sensitive stage.
