The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has arrested 145 motorists for drunk driving in just one week as part of its intensified operations aimed at improving road safety across the city.

The arrests were made between Monday, June 30, and Sunday, July 6, during routine patrols, roadblocks, and proactive enforcement operations targeting intoxicated drivers.

JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, said the department remains committed to stamping out reckless and dangerous behaviour on the city’s roads.

“The safety of our citizens on Johannesburg's roads remains our top priority,” said Jaca. “The arrest of 145 motorists in just one week for driving under the influence sends a clear message: if you choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, you will be caught and you will face the full might of the law.”

Jaca urged motorists to take responsibility for their actions and to make use of alternative transport if they plan to drink.

“Our officers will continue to be highly visible and vigilant, ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone.”

The JMPD said such operations will continue across Johannesburg as part of its zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations. Drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of road fatalities and serious injuries in South Africa.
