Police in Gauteng have arrested four suspects in connection with gang-related offences in Newclare and Eldorado Park, following two separate operations conducted by members of the Anti-Gang Unit on Saturday, June 14.

The first incident unfolded around 7.45pm in Newclare when Anti-Gang Unit officers patrolling Dowling and Hamilton Avenue stopped and searched a 21-year-old suspect. The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off.

As officers attempted to arrest him, the situation escalated when the suspect’s parents - aged 46 and 48 - allegedly interfered with the arrest, physically pulling him away from the police. Tensions rose further as community members began pelting police vehicles with stones. Officers called for backup and fired a warning shot to disperse the crowd and restore order.

The suspect was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, while his parents were charged with malicious damage to property and obstructing police duties.

In a separate operation in Eldorado Park Extension 1, police arrested a 43-year-old suspect in possession of a stolen silver Ford Figo. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Mondeor. When officers attempted to intercept the car, a high-speed chase ensued, during which suspects opened fire on police. One suspect was apprehended, while two others fled on foot and remain at large.

All four arrested individuals are expected to appear in court soon. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.

Gauteng police have reaffirmed their commitment to cracking down on gang activity and related violence. Residents are encouraged to report criminal activity to SAPS or anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
