What are orgasms? As I get older, they seem more difficult to find, so I’ve been on a mission to find out where they are hiding. Orgasms are a series of muscle contractions in the genital area accompanied by the sudden release of endorphins that produce oxytocin and dopamine.
Oxytocin is a natural pain reliever and creates intimacy. It induces the feeling of love.
Dopamine amplifies sensations of pleasure. If you have to ask what it feels like you probably haven’t had one. So, if you are one of the approximately 30% of women who have never had one, they often ask- What does it feel like?
Orgasm can feel like uncontrollable undulating waves of sexual pleasure that leave you feeling relaxed. They can be long or short, intense and discreet as the person experiencing them. They can increase your lifespan, make you look younger, boost your immune system, improve cognition, and keep skin healthy. Strengthen muscle tone in the genital and pelvic floor area.
Stronger pelvic floor muscles help intensify orgasm. It’s also a great stress reliever, a happy by product of sex but not the ultimate goal. I always think that one type of orgasm is enough, but I now know there are loads more.
There’s no universal agreement on an exact number, but sexologists and researchers often talk about 7 to 14 different types of orgasms, depending on how you define them (anatomically, energetically, emotionally, etc.).
And we’re talking about women’s orgasms. Not sure if anyone knows how many men can have. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. And extremely happy if I can have just one.
Here’s a rundown of the most commonly referenced types:
Clitoral Orgasm
The most common type for people with vulvas. Involves stimulation of the clitoris, which has over 8,000 nerve endings. A 2017 study published in the Journal of sex and marital therapy shared that 36.6 percent of women in the US require clitoral stimulation to reach climax, which makes it the most common orgasm. I personally think it’s a lot more, but I haven’t done the research.
Vaginal (G-Spot) Orgasm
Caused by stimulation of the G-spot, a spongy area inside the vaginal wall, on the belly button side of the body. Often described as deeper and more full-bodied than clitoral orgasms. Freud had a lot to say about this, but I think he was full of hot air. With a vaginal orgasm some type of penetrative stimulation is necessary. A vaginal orgasm is felt deep inside the vaginal canal. The area is sensitive and will swell when aroused. These orgasms are said to be more intense than vaginal orgasms but not as powerful as clitoral.
Blended Orgasm
A mix of clitoral and vaginal (G-spot) stimulation at the same time. Often intense and can lead to stronger muscle contractions and emotional Responses. Many say this is the one to have making the rabbit style vibrator still one of the most popular toys around.
Cervical Orgasm
Stimulates the cervix, deep inside the vagina. Usually takes longer to achieve and is often described as deeply emotional or even spiritual. The best way to reach is to pull your legs up.
Anal Orgasm
Involves stimulation of the anus and rectal area, which shares nerve pathways with the genitals. An anal orgasm can be an intensive experience. Many people have found that they have stronger orgasm with anal sex play due to the multiple and sensitive nerves located in the anal region. Can be experienced by all genders. Needs loads of lubricant.
A-Spot Orgasm (Anterior Fornix)
A lesser-known erogenous zone located deep inside the vagina, near the cervix. The A-Spot is thought to be the second G-Spot located deep inside the vaginal canal. It can be somewhat hard to find but is located where the wall of the vagina begins to curve upwards in between the uterus and rectum.
Continuous stimulation can lead to a strong orgasm.
Produces intense lubrication and can lead to prolonged orgasms.
U-Spot Orgasm
The U-spot is around the urethral opening. It is made far more intense if you have a slight UTI. Stimulating it can be intensely pleasurable and is linked to female ejaculation for some.
Squirting Orgasm (Female Ejaculation)
Not always tied to a specific spot, but often occurs with G-spot stimulation. I want to know, other than the flow of liquid is this very different from a G-Spot Orgasm. Involves the expulsion of fluid. Messy, very messy and almost as rare as a unicorn.
Nipple Orgasm
Nipple stimulation can lead to orgasm, as it activates the same area of the brain as genital stimulation. No genital stimulation required.
Energetic Orgasm
No genital contact needed either. Often happens during practices like tantra, breathwork, or deep meditative states. Feels like waves or pulses of energy.
Nocturnal Orgasm (Sleep Orgasm or Wet Dream )
Happens during REM sleep without conscious stimulation. Common for all genders.
Mental or Fantasy Orgasm
Triggered by fantasy, imagination, or strong erotic thought alone. Often practiced by people with strong mind-body awareness.
Oral Orgasm
An oral orgasm happens from kissing or other oral pleasure. A person’s lips have a heightened sensitivity so extended passionate kissing can lead to an orgasm. Others find that performing oral sex on others brings them to climax. If your tongue and/or mouth is extremely sensitive, you may find yourself able to experience an oral orgasm.
Coregasm
A corgasm is said to be reached strictly from working out. The coregasm workout advocates raising heart rate and performing lower abdominal and core exercises claiming that in turn it will draw enough blood directly to the genital area that results in a small orgasm. I’m not sure this is ever going to happen to me, for so many reasons.
In the grand treasure hunt of 14 different types of pleasure, orgasms are the glittering gems we chase with wide eyes, curious hearts, and sometimes very creative yoga poses. Whether they arrive with a bang, a whimper, a giggle, or a full-body cosmic shiver, one thing’s for sure: when you catch one, it’s like your body throws a tiny party and every cell is invited.
So go forth, explore your pleasure map, and celebrate each glorious “O” like the joyful confetti cannon of happiness it is.
