This August, the fashion world turns its focus to Moscow, where the BRICS+ Fashion Summit promises to be a game-changer for global style and innovation.

Set against the backdrop of an evolving global fashion narrative, South Africa is poised to make a powerful statement at this influential gathering, taking place from August 28 to 30.

Representing the nation at the Summit is an inspiring delegation, featuring three stalwarts of the South African fashion scene: Stephen Manzini, the visionary behind Soweto Fashion Week and the South African Fashion Association; Vusi Ngobeni, a forward-thinking design strategist from the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture; and Tinyiko Baloyi, an academic leader at the University of Johannesburg dedicated to nurturing the next generation of fashion innovators.

The BRICS+ Fashion Summit is more than just a typical event on the fashion calendar; it serves as a melting pot for ideas, textiles, talent, and trade. Now in its third year, the summit has established itself as a crucial catalyst for emerging fashion markets, drawing together delegations from over 60 countries and focusing on collaborative growth and intercultural exchange.

Moscow has evolved into an unexpected yet vibrant fashion capital. It now hosts designers, textile producers, and fashion federations from around the world, positioning itself as a central player in the industry.

At its core, the Summit will delve into vital themes such as sustainability, innovation, educational opportunities, and international trade challenges that countries within the BRICS+ bloc face. This high-level dialogue is timely, particularly as South Africa looks to make its mark in the evolving landscape of global fashion.

“For Africa and other emerging economies, collaboration in the fashion sector is vital,” Stephen Manzini told Saturday Star.

“It allows us to share resources, open new markets, and amplify our cultural narratives on a global stage. Fashion becomes more than just clothing, it becomes a tool for economic empowerment, cultural exchange, and storytelling.”

South Africa’s active participation underscores a commitment to redefining global fashion narratives, inviting African designers and brands to occupy their rightful space alongside international counterparts. The BRICS+ platform represents an opportunity for African fashion to flourish within a new global value chain, where creativity knows no bounds.

Coinciding with the BRICS+ summit, Moscow Fashion Week, a spectacular showcase that runs from August 28 to September 2, will feature a vibrant multicultural lineup, with designs from Brazil, China, India, and Spain, among others. Notably, South African fashion icon David Tlale is set to debut his latest collection, further evidencing the continent’s burgeoning impact in the global fashion arena.

As Moscow asserts itself as an unanticipated yet compelling fashion hub, the participation of South African talent signals a dynamic narrative of inclusivity in style.
