On Saturday, 02 August 2025, the MMC for Housing and Human Settlement, joined by Ward 89 Councillor, Tshepo Malefane, returned to Marry Me Informal Settlement in Soshanguve to provide an update on the formalisation of the informal settlement.
The meeting follows the Community Imbizo that was held on 26 March 2025 and a follow-up that was held on 15 April 2025.
During the community meeting, residents were informed of the following update:
- 3 208 households were identified and registered during the shack-marking process, and new structures have been erected, leading to further land invasion. The new shacks have been built outside the boundaries of Portion 15 of the farm Wentzelrust 223 JR, owned by the City.
- Residents were discouraged from building new shacks outside the borders of the informal settlement, as this would delay the process of formalisation.
- Those who qualify for housing will be relocated to a new area, Kopanong, where walk-up houses will be constructed. Other residents will be allocated stands in the area.
- Through the decanting and formalisation process, 3 000 stands will be allocated and registered to qualifying residents.
- Residents were informed that the project of township development is part of the City’s project for the 2025/26 financial year.
- Once the informal settlement is blocked out, the City will begin work to install electricity.
- Residents were encouraged to resolve ownership of the stands before the project began, and for those who didn’t qualify, to approach the Housing Department to apply for housing.
- Councillor Malefane was encouraged to apply for solar high mast lights from MMC Boshielo.
- Those were registered and allocated numbers in the past, which doesn’t mean that they automatically have stands or RDP houses. They were encouraged to liaise with Councillor Malefane to assist.
This Multiparty Coalition Government is committed to the restoration of our people’s dignity by working tirelessly to provide dignified and livable human settlements.
