Next year, the country will hold the local government elections. The election results are obvious: no political party will win with a majority. Coalition governments will be formed in most, if not many, municipalities.

The challenge is that, in SA, coalition governments don't work at the local government level. That said, the silly season is upon us. When it became public that Helen Zille is considering running for the Joburg Mayor, the first person to jump was the Action SA leader, Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba went public to tell the world that Zille is not fit to run Joburg. The pertinent question is: Why is Mashaba worried about Zille's interest in leading Joburg as a mayor? He seems to be afraid that she may garner more voter support and eat away at his supporters. I can't think of any reason.

What does the Action SA leader have against the DA chairperson? He seems to be holding a grudge against her. Every chance he gets, he badmouths her. He now sounds like a stuck record. What he is doing is not politics, it's personal.

Let bygones be bygones. If my memory serves me well, Zille is the former Cape Town mayor and ex-Premier of the Western Cape. She has run a smooth administration in the above-mentioned areas. Not only that, she has also built the DA to what it is today. So, she is competent. My worry is her age and loose tongue.

Lastly, Mashaba was the Joburg Mayor under the DA banner. Interestingly, it is Zille who invited the Action SA leader to join the second most powerful political party in the country. Today, the same Mashaba is talking badly about her.

He must just chill and focus on building his party. The DA will decide who will be their Joburg mayoral candidate.
