Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been elected leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Hill-Lewis defeated Sedibeng caucus leader Sibusiso Dyonase in a contest that, while closely watched, ultimately confirmed his status as the frontrunner to succeed former leader John Steenhuisen.

The transition comes at a pivotal moment. The DA is no longer confined to opposition benches but is now a central player in the Government of National Unity (GNU), raising the stakes for its new leader.

In a measured but emphatic handover, Steenhuisen framed the moment as a culmination of years of political repositioning.

“It is mission accomplished,” he said. “We are no longer a party of opposition. We are a party in government, shaping the destiny of South Africa.”

Hill-Lewis inherited a party balancing opportunity and pressure—tasked with proving it can govern effectively while maintaining its reformist edge.

The party believes the Hill-Lewis is the best candidate to take over.
