Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has appointed Roche Mogorosi as the acting Head of Department for Community Safety, following the suspension of both the department’s Head of Department and Chief Financial Officer.

Lesufi confirmed the suspensions on August 5, 2025.

The suspensions follow the conclusion of a forensic investigation by the Provincial Forensic Audit Unit within the Office of the Premier, which uncovered financial irregularities in the department.

The case is part of the 39 forensic investigations reports that the Premier made publicly available last Sunday.

Lesufi stated his intervention was prompted by a need to safeguard the department's integrity, adding that the suspensions are a precautionary measure to ensure unbiased and fair investigations.

“The provincial government is committed to restoring public trust by upholding the highest standards of integrity. We maintain a zero-tolerance stance against corruption and misconduct. Through proactive and corrective measures, we will strengthen governance, ensure the ethical and responsible use of public funds, and safeguard the interests of Gauteng residents,” said Lesufi.

Mogorosi’s appointment takes immediate effect and is aimed at ensuring stability and continued leadership within the department.

He brings extensive experience in public administration, with a background in governance, public participation, human resources, and strategic programme management, said Lesufi.

Before stepping into this new role, Mhaga said Mogorosi served as Chief Director of Schools Technology Support Services at the Gauteng Department of Education.

''He holds a Master of Management in Governance from the Wits School of Governance and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tshwane University of Technology.''

Lesufi said the appointment reflects the province’s commitment to strengthening governance and ensuring service delivery continues uninterrupted.

“We are committed to restoring public trust and strengthening governance. Mogorosi has the expertise to lead the department with integrity as we work to ensure accountability and continued service delivery to the people of Gauteng,” said Lesufi.

He added that the appointment aims to bring stability during a period of transition.

“This appointment will ensure continuity of leadership and stability within the department,” said Lesufi.
