Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana has appeared in the Mzimkhulu Magistrates' Court in connection with the murder of former African National Congress (ANC) Youth League Secretary, Sindiso Magaqa.

The former senior uMzimkhulu municipality official was rearrested on Monday in Malvern, in Durban.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal said Skhosana, 55, faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, unlawful possession of firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and defeating the administration of justice.

She said the case has been remanded to August 1 for the defence to appoint counsel for the bail application.

Arrest

According to police, Skhosana was arrested by the The South African Police Service(SAPS) Political Killings Task Team.

"He was previously arrested in 2018 alongside the late Mayor of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, a businessman, two former police officers and a hitman," said national police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Meanwhile, the hitman, Sbusiso Ncengwa was convicted to 25 years imprisonment on July 7.

Magaqa was killed in Umzimkhulu in July 2017. It is believed that Magaqa was killed for speaking out against a corruption-riddled tender to construct a local memorial hall.
