KwaZulu-Natal police said they have launched an investigation after a video surfaced showing a school learner being assaulted, allegedly by police in the Jozini area.

This comes after learners from two high schools marched to a non-protesting school and staged a violent protest at the gate

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said things got violent and four learners were arrested for public violence, attack on police officers, and malicious damage to property outside a school in Jozini on Wednesday.

“Four learners, aged between 18 and 20 years old, were arrested, but were later released to the custody of their parents,” Netshiunda said.

Police also confirmed they have noted videos doing the rounds on social media. The footage shows police assaulting a learner as he was being led to the van.

“Such conduct is unacceptable, and the authenticity of the video will be investigated. And if police are found to have acted using excessive force, necessary actions will be taken,” Netshiunda said.

Police also urged protesters to obey the law.

“Students, learners, and everyone else who wishes to march or protest are reminded that their actions must not violate the law because police will act decisively to protect lives, livelihood, and property,” Netshiunda said.

The arrested learners are expected to appear in the Ubombo Magistrate's Court, accompanied by their parents or guardians, on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
