Police have arrested a SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory captain in Pretoria on charges of defeating the ends of justice, in a development linked to several high-profile murder investigations and evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, May 22, at his residence in Pretoria following an operation conducted by the commission's recommendations task team.
According to police, the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to stabilise and protect the integrity of sensitive criminal investigations currently under scrutiny.
“The Commission’s Recommendations Task Team has arrested a captain attached to the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory on charges of defeating the ends of justice,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe confirmed that the investigation points to allegations that the officer interfered with or compromised aspects of ongoing murder cases under investigation.
During the operation, investigators also seized a range of state property allegedly linked to the case, including ballistic reports, ammunition, and other evidential material believed to be relevant to ongoing investigations.
Authorities said the recovered items may form part of critical forensic evidence in active case dockets currently being examined.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 25.
