The community of Vaal is grappling with shock and sadness as police investigate the tragic deaths of Lindiwe Yvonne Mngxongo, 39, and her three young children, Kamvelihle, 12, Zalisidinga, 9, and Ziqhamo, 7. The family was discovered unresponsive inside their home in Sonderwater on April 9.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene, where they pronounced the mother and her children dead upon arrival. Police spokesperson Nthabiseng Mokhachane revealed that authorities found Mngxongo in her bedroom, while the children were discovered in another room.

The harrowing scene included a bucket suspected to contain vomit, which is now a key element of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of their demise.

“The circumstances surrounding the deaths are still under investigation, and we urge anyone with information to come forward,” Mokhachane said.

Their bodies were later taken to forensic pathology services for post-mortem examinations.

A four-year-old child who had complained of feeling unwell survived the incident and remains in hospital receiving medical care.

Police confirmed that toxicology and post-mortem results are still pending as part of the inquest process.

The family was buried on Friday.

Members of the public with information are urged to contact Detective Captain Corrie van der Merwe or Sebokeng SAPS on 082 822 7629 or 016 466 2047.
