A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly setting her boyfriend’s house alight following a domestic dispute, destroying property estimated at R45,000 in Ha-Mashamba, Tshivhuyuni village in Limpopo.

Police said the incident unfolded on Saturday morning after a 45-year-old man allegedly ended the relationship and asked the suspect to remove her belongings from his home.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said it is alleged that at about 09:30, the couple had an argument at the man’s homestead before he left for work.

“At approximately 10:20 the same day, the victim received a call from a neighbour informing him that his house was on fire and that the suspect was seen setting it alight.”

Ledwaba said when the man returned, he found his one-roomed house engulfed in flames, with all his belongings destroyed.

He added that the suspect allegedly fled the scene after setting the house on fire.

Police launched an immediate search and traced the woman to a local taxi rank, where she was arrested the same day while attempting to board a taxi to Polokwane.

“The suspect was traced and arrested at a local taxi rank while attempting to board a taxi to Polokwane,” Ledwaba said.

The woman is expected to appear before the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 13, where she will face an arson charge.

Police investigations are ongoing.
