The Ekapa Minerals Mine, located in Kimberley, is navigating a challenging situation as recovery operations continue for the miners trapped following a mud rush.
Amid the ongoing crisis, the company, which is under provisional liquidation until March 17, has been in contact with the families of the trapped workers, primarily through the subcontractor that employed them.
Ekapa Minerals has claimed significant progress in its recovery efforts.
However, the mine has refrained from providing a timeline for the recovery of the bodies, citing safety as the top priority in these delicate operations.
According to the SABC, the mine's management is addressing allegations from family representatives who expressed concerns regarding the lack of direct communication and assistance from the company.
In response, Ekapa Minerals defended its communication strategy, asserting that information is filtered through the contractor to guarantee that families receive verified updates.
The situation has undoubtedly been traumatic for families awaiting news, and Ekapa Minerals has acknowledged the emotional toll this incident has taken. “We recognise the pain and uncertainty that families are experiencing. Our primary focus is on safety as we carry out these operations,” said a spokesperson for the mine.
In addition to clearing more than 32,000 cubic metres of water and debris, the mine has refuted claims of a second mud rush, aiming to quell fears and misinformation surrounding the incident.
As the legal landscape surrounding the mine becomes increasingly complex with provisional liquidation proceedings ongoing at the Northern Cape High Court, the situation remains tense, yet the recovery team is committed to ensuring a thorough search.
