In February, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) detained a fraudulent doctor who was practicing in the heart of Johannesburg without the proper qualifications.

Members of the South African Health Professions Council provided the police with information, which led to this incident.

The male suspect worked at the Marble Towers Building without the appropriate credentials.

When officers asked to see his practice number or permit, he could not provide any legitimate documentation.

The officers arrested him for fraud and contravention of section 17 (1) of the Health Professions Act 56 of 1994. The suspect was detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS.

Two instances of fake doctor incidents in Johannesburg in recent years that demonstrate an ongoing crisis are the arrest of influencer Matthew Lani at Helen Joseph Hospital and another suspect at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

In the last three years, the HPCSA has detained over 120 phony physicians for practicing medicine without a licence and posing as medical professionals.

On January 28, the JMPD Tactical Response Unit arrested a 50-year-old Pakistani national who was allegedly impersonating a registered medical practitioner.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa urges the public to verify the credentials of practitioners.
