In a shocking turn of events in the Stanger CBD, police have confirmed the arrest of two women who allegedly abandoned the body of their deceased relative at a Capitec Bank branch on Wednesday.
According to police reports, the women were taken into custody following the disturbing incident.
The alarming incident was captured on video and has been shared widely on social media. The bank branch has been temporarily closed.
According to a statement from the KwaDukuza police station, released by Constable Siphesihle Myeni, the incident occurred on Wednesday, at approximately 10am, at a bank on Chief Albert Luthuli Street.
The cops explained:“The family had reportedly brought the corpse to the bank due to non-payment of funeral cover insurance.
“Reports indicate that the family had two policies with the bank for their grandmother; one was paid out and the second was pending verification due to an unclear funeral parlour stamp. The family brought the deceased's body to the bank using a funeral palour vehicle, causing disturbance and intimidation.”
The police confirmed that the women are facing charges of extortion, disturbance, and intimidation and were expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on February 19.
The body of the deceased was taken to the KwaDukuza Mortuary for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Capitec said it was deeply saddened by the distressing incident that occurred at its Stanger branch in KwaDukuza.
