A police informant who survived an apparent hit in which at least 16 bullets were fired at his vehicle outside his Boksburg home last week has now been found dead.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an inquest docket after 41-year-old Wiandre Pretorius allegedly took his own life at a petrol station in Brakpan on the East Rand.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 7, when Pretorius allegedly shot himself at a filling station in Brakpan in front of his partner, police sergeant Juan-Mare Eksteen.
National SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that an inquest docket had been registered.
“All role players, including police detectives and forensic experts, attended the crime scene. This matter is under investigation,” Mathe said.
Pretorius had previously been linked to testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where his role as an informant came under scrutiny during proceedings into alleged police misconduct. He and others were implicated in the murder of a Brakpan suspect in 2022.
