SOCIAL media is abuzz with a video clip a video circulating on TikTok that appears to show a police officer in uniform under the influence of alcohol.

This video has generated significant public discussion, with a group of individuals accusing the officer of drunkenness.

''The Provincial Commissioner, who has a clear stance against ill-discipline and intemperate behaviour by our members, views these allegations with utmost seriousness.

As a result, the District Commissioner has been instructed to launch an immediate investigation. Should these allegations be substantiated, it would constitute not only serious misconduct but also a criminal offence. We believe these allegations are damaging to the integrity and professional image of the SAPS, further contributing to the trust deficit between the police and the community.''

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that two members of the Patriotic Alliance and Operation Dudula, who travelled from Gauteng to support the group in Bethanie, may have crucial information to expedite this investigation.

''Efforts to gather evidence from locals suggest that these two individuals are best positioned to help us unravel the allegations against the police officer. Therefore, the SAPS urges these two individuals to contact the District Commissioner or the Provincial Corporate Communication & Liaison as a matter of urgency to assist with this investigation. We assure the public that this matter will be investigated without fear, favour, or prejudice,'' police said.

Police strongly advise these witnesses to come forward and assist the police. ''We also want to caution the public that creating and publicising such serious information without reporting it to the relevant authorities may lead to charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

''Obstructing, interfering with, or hindering the police in their duties, including maliciously circulating false or defamatory statements, is a criminal offence.''
