A  21-day maintenance programme officially started this morning across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.

Rand Water is conducting maintenance work that is causing water supply interruptions in Johannesburg.

Residents have been advised to prepare for possible low water pressure or complete supply interruptions during the maintenance period.

In some parts of Soweto, reduced water supply was experienced as early as this weekend.

This large-scale infrastructure upgrade will improve the city’s long-term water supply reliability, but will cause significant short-term interruptions that impact millions across multiple regions. The water outage will disrupt several key areas, so residents must prepare for reduced water availability during this period.

Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala says residents may experience poor pressure to no water during the maintenance period.

“Affected Johannesburg water systems include Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Lenasia, Crown Gardens, the Commando system, which comprises Brixton, Hursthill and Crosby, Aeroton, and Naturena. Once the maintenance is completed, it will take several days to fully recover and for normal water services to return.”

Joburg Water is expected to make tankers available as a temporary measure to provide water to areas experiencing outages.
