Tshwane police thwarted an attempted hijacking and arrested three suspects found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Captain Johan Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District Police, reported a dramatic turn of events on May 12, when a motorist narrowly escaped an attempted hijacking on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area. At approximately 3 pm, armed suspects emerged and confronted the unsuspecting driver, sparking a swift police response that led to multiple arrests.

Van Dyk explained that the motorist had pulled over on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area when a white VW Jetta suddenly stopped in front of him, blocking his path. Moments later, armed suspects jumped out of the vehicle and advanced towards him, threatening him at gunpoint in an apparent hijacking attempt.

According to the victim, he had pulled over to the side of the road when a white VW Jetta stopped in front of him. Three men exited the vehicle — one armed with a firearm — and instructed him to get out of his car.

He added that just as the suspects were about to carry out the hijacking, they spotted a police vehicle approaching the scene.

Startled by the sudden presence of law enforcement, the suspects hastily abandoned their plan, ordered the victim to leave the area, and scrambled back into their getaway vehicle before speeding off in an attempt to evade arrest.

The nearby police officers were immediately alerted and responded swiftly. They managed to intercept the suspects and successfully apprehended all three.

''Upon searching the individuals, officers recovered a firearm with eight rounds of ammunition. The suspects were unable to provide a valid explanation for being in possession of the weapon,“ He said.

Van Dyk explained that all three suspects were apprehended at the scene and are now facing charges of attempted hijacking, along with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspects were arrested and charged with attempted hijacking as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

''Further investigation is underway to determine whether the suspects are linked to other criminal activities. The firearm will also be subjected to ballistic testing to establish if it has been used in previous crimes,“ Van Dyk added.

Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, commended the officers for their quick action and dedication to protecting the community.
