TWO PEOPLE convicted of racketeering and ATM fraud have been setenced to 51 years in jail each by the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.
Michael Manya, 51, and Millicent Mkhwanazi, 48, were sentenced yesterday.
National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said they were convicted of racketeering after working as a syndicate and would approach unsuspecting ATM users, interfere with their transactions by distracting them.
He said they would push the cardless transaction button that locked the card slot and request a 9/10 digit pin. The client would be unable to insert his card and they would then take the card from the client and pretend to put it in the slot while concealing it behind money or an ATM slip and steal it.
SA Banking Risk Information Centre’s chief Kalyani Pillay said it was pleased with the convictions.
