The KwaZulu-Natal transport department has said that a truck driver, who was involved in a horrific accident on the N2, between Amatigulu and Dokodweni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, was found deceased.

Early on Saturday, IOL reported that the department had said it was not clear whether the driver is under the truck or if he had fled the scene.

It was reported that a preliminary report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate indicated that the truck crashed into the light motor vehicle and pushed it into the side of the road. Five people in the car died instantly.

In a statement on Saturday night, the department said that search and rescue teams had located the driver.

“The driver was trapped in his sugar-loaded truck. The driver is, unfortunately, deceased. The jaws of life are being used to remove his body. The owners of the trucking company are at the scene of the accident.”

The department said with the truck driver's death, the death toll has increased to six.

“We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.”

Meanwhile, the department said statistics had shown that during the first week of August, there were several horrific road accidents.

“During the first week of August, we lost more than 30 people on our roads. We have observed an increase in road accidents around paydays - particularly during the end of the month, the 15th and the 25th of the month.

“Many people are more likely to be out and about spending their salaries during the period. This often leads to more traffic and increased pedestrian activity, resulting in road accidents and fatalities.”
