Lloyiso finds his voice with debut album 'Never Thought I Could—Part 1'

For Lloyiso, releasing his debut album is not just another milestone — it is a deeply personal moment rooted in growth, honesty, and finally finding his voice.

More than a decade after first stepping into the spotlight as a finalist on Idols South Africa, the singer-songwriter’s debut album release introduces what he describes as the most honest version of himself yet through Never Thought I Could—Part 1.

And rather than measuring the journey by time, Lloyiso says the decision to release an album came down to something far more personal—alignment. “For a long time, I was creating with full understanding of myself or the freedom to tell the story the way I needed to.

"Now, I feel like I’ve lived enough, felt enough, and lost and found myself enough times to actually have something cohesive to say. This moment feels right because I’m finally ready to be honest in a way I wasn’t before,” he said.

That sense of alignment is at the heart of the project — a body of work shaped by lived experiences, moments of doubt, and a growing sense of self-awareness. “There were moments where I genuinely didn’t think I could get here, not in this way, not on my own terms,” he said of the album’s title.

“It’s about overcoming every version of myself that doubted it was possible.”

Now stepping into his artistry with renewed confidence, Lloyiso describes this chapter as one of freedom—both personally and creatively.

“Freedom from fear, from needing validation, from shrinking myself,” he shared. “Artistically, it feels like an introduction. Like this is the first time people are really meeting me as I am, without filters.”

This project, which is preceded by numerous singles and EPs, carries themes of growth, reflection, gratitude, and self-discovery—elements that have shaped not only the music but also the man behind the tunes.

“Growth has been uncomfortable but necessary,” he reflected. “Reflection has been about looking back at versions of myself with compassion instead of judgment. And the self-discovery…that’s ongoing. But I’ve learned that I’m stronger than I thought and that my voice deserves to take up space.”

And while many still associate him with his early breakthrough on Idols, Lloyiso sees that chapter as just the beginning. A chapter that gave him a glimpse of what was possible in his artistry.

“Everything since then has been about growing into this moment and redefining it on my own terms.

''Sonically, the album leans into emotion, blending elements of R&B, soul, Afro influences, and atmospheric sounds. The music moves freely, guided more by feeling than genre. Across its seven tracks, the project unfolds like an internal conversation.

“Some songs represent love, both found and lost. Some sit in confusion. Others are about letting go,” he said. “Together, they tell a story of someone trying to understand their own heart.”

Lloyiso has come to be known for his emotional depth, so his approach to songwriting remains rooted in honesty rather than perfection. “I don’t think about the audience when I’m writing,” he admitted.

“The more personal something is, the more universal it becomes.” On the contrary, that honesty has also made parts of the process difficult, particularly when confronting his own truths. Lloyiso admits that some songs, where he had to be completely open, were the hardest. But those are the songs that mean the most to him.

Choosing to release the album in parts was another intentional decision — one that reflects the evolving nature of his story.

“This journey isn’t one moment,” he says. “I wanted people to sit with each part and experience it fully.”

“Every decision is mine (as an independent artist), and that makes the art feel more personal,” he shared. And looking back, there is a quiet sense of pride in how far he has come.

''And as Never Thought I Could – Part 1 marks the beginning of a new chapter; one thing is clear — Lloyiso is no longer holding back.

“This feels like the beginning of something much bigger than I imagined,” he says.
