The alarming statistics surrounding childhood obesity in South Africa have prompted a decisive response from the Gauteng Health Department, which reports that 23% of children aged six to fourteen years in the country are classified as overweight or obese.

The department has unveiled the Asibe Healthy Jozi Kids initiative as part of its comprehensive strategy to combat rising obesity rates among children in the province.

The Asibe Healthy Jozi Kids initiative is tailored to promote healthy eating habits, increase physical activity, and create supportive environments that bolster the wellbeing of children.

MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, at the forefront of this initiative, emphasised the necessity of collaborative efforts to address this pressing issue.

“We work with schools, parents, healthcare workers, and partners to promote healthy eating, regular physical activity, and supportive environments for our children,” Nkomo-Ralehoko stated.

“Prevention starts at home, at school, and in our communities. We must encourage our children to move more, eat better, and build healthy habits that will protect them for life.”

This commitment will take centre stage during the upcoming Provincial World Obesity Day Indaba, scheduled to be held in Sedibeng on Wednesday. The event aims to foster dialogue among stakeholders about strategies and initiatives to combat overweight and obesity in children, ultimately aiming to create a healthier generation.

By leveraging support from various sectors, the Gauteng Health Department seeks to instill sustainable changes that will not only impact the current generation of children but also lay the groundwork for future health outcomes. The involvement of educators and families plays a pivotal role, ensuring that children are nurtured in an environment conducive to healthy lifestyle choices.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the rapidly increasing rates of childhood obesity, a crisis that poses significant health risks, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and psychosocial challenges.

Here are practical strategies that can help foster healthier habits at home, ensuring that your family thrives.

Cook fresh meals at home more often

The first step towards a healthier lifestyle is to cook fresh meals at home. Not only is this typically more cost-effective than frequent takeaways, but it also allows for greater control over ingredients and portion sizes. Encouraging family members to join in the cooking process can turn meal preparation into a bonding activity, making it not just nutritious but enjoyable too.

Hydrate wisely

Next, consider replacing cool drinks with water or homemade fruit-infused water. This not only quenches thirst but also helps reduce unnecessary sugar intake. Getting creative with fruit combinations can make hydration exciting, especially for children, leading them to opt for water more frequently.

Encourage outdoor play and sports

Screen time has become a predominant part of daily life for both adults and children. To counter this, it’s crucial to limit screen time and encourage children to play outside or participate in school sports every day. This not only promotes physical activity but also enhances social skills and boosts mental health. Scheduling regular outdoor activities can foster a love for nature and physical fitness that may last a lifetime.

Healthy lunchboxes

Packing healthy lunchboxes is another excellent way to ensure your children receive balanced nutrition throughout the school day. Instead of filling lunchboxes with sweets, consider including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Not only are these options nourishing, but they also cultivate a preference for healthier food options early on.

Family mealtime matters

Finally, trying to eat together as a family when possible can have a profound impact on children's eating habits. Sharing meals provides an opportunity for conversations about nutrition, allowing children to learn good habits by observing their parents’ choices. This sharing environment also strengthens family bonds, creating lasting memories around the dinner table.
