Police have confirmed that an urgent investigation is under way following the circulation of a video on TikTok, which appears to show a uniformed officer allegedly under the influence of alcohol while on duty.
The video depicts members of the public confronting the officer alongside other SAPS members.
According to police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, the Provincial Commissioner has taken a serious view of the footage and the allegations.
"The Provincial Commissioner who is on record as saying that ill-discipline and intemperate behaviour by members shall not be tolerated, views the video including the allegations in a very serious light and has instructed the District Commissioner to immediately investigate the allegations, which if indeed true amounts not only to serious misconduct, but also a criminal offence," Mokgwabone said.
"These allegations cannot and should not be taken lightly as they are damaging to the integrity and professional image of the SAPS further contributing to the trust deficit between the police and the community," Mokgwabone added.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that two individuals, identified as members of the Patriotic Alliance and Operation Dudula who had travelled from Gauteng to Bethanie, may hold key information.
The SAPS has urged them to come forward without delay.
Police have emphasised that the inquiry will be conducted impartially and without favour.
"It is equally important to point out that this matter shall be investigated without fear, favour or prejudice," Mokgwabone stated.
The SAPS has also warned that anyone spreading serious allegations without formally reporting them could face legal consequences.
