Bafana Bafana fans invited to claim the title of South Africa’s ultimate superfan

After 16 years of heartbreak, near misses and fading hope, Bafana Bafana’s return to the FIFA World Cup has reignited excitement across South Africa and now the country’s most loyal supporters are finally getting their moment in the spotlight.

As anticipation builds ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026, South Africans are being invited to prove why they deserve to be crowned the nation’s ultimate Bafana Bafana superfan in a campaign celebrating the supporters who stood by the national team through its most difficult years.

The nationwide search was sparked by a LinkedIn post from Bafana coach Hugo Broos, calling on fans to share their passion for the team.

Supporters are required to submit a 30-second video explaining why they deserve to be named South Africa’s biggest Bafana Bafana superfan by posting the clip on social media and tagging @CastleLagerSA. Entries close at midnight on 1 June 2026, after which six finalists will be shortlisted.

The winning supporter will play a central role during the World Cup campaign period, attending fan viewing events, participating in watch parties and helping rally support behind Bafana Bafana as the team prepares for its biggest football stage in more than a decade.

For many supporters, the team’s qualification represents more than just a return to the global tournament. It symbolises resilience, loyalty and the emotional journey of fans who continued backing the national side despite years of disappointment and rebuilding.

The campaign pays tribute to those supporters who carried belief in Bafana Bafana long before qualification became reality again.

“This is a massive moment for football and we are going into it, not only as sponsors of our national male football team, but as the official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as well. It was therefore befitting that we mark this year, with a gesture that bears significance,” said Thomas Lawrence.

Lawrence said the campaign was created to honour supporters who remained loyal during the team’s 16-year absence from football’s biggest tournament.

“There is absolutely nothing else that can bring people together like sports. This campaign has the potential to once again bring South Africans together, through sports - The Fans That Stood the Test of Time is our way of saying to every loyal supporter who held on through sixteen years with Bafana Bafana: we saw you, we appreciate and celebrate you. You were always standing right there with us,” he said.

The campaign also includes the release of a film tracing South Africa’s football journey from 1992 to Bafana Bafana’s qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026, highlighting the moments of hope, heartbreak and unity shared by generations of supporters.

The initiative forms part of Castle Lager’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, The Fans That Stood the Test of Time, which celebrates the unwavering loyalty of South African football supporters.
